Position Summary
The Senior Accountant will work closely with WellShare’s Deputy Executive Director to execute monthly financial tasks and support long-term fiscal strategy. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented professional with nonprofit and claims-based healthcare accounting experience. The Senior Accountant will be responsible for executing month-end close, managing revenue recognition, supporting budgeting and forecasting processes, and contributing to internal controls and financial policies.
This role requires the ability to manage multi-program financial environments.
Key Responsibilities
• Financial reporting: Preparing and analyzing financial statements, including balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and cash flow statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
• A/P & Payroll Processing: Perform accounts payable, payroll, and administrative functions for the organization in accordance with established policies, procedures, and controls.
• Month-end and year-end close: Managing and assisting with the accurate and timely completion of month-end and year-end closing procedures, including monthly account reconciliations.
• Account reconciliation and analysis: Reconciling sub-ledger to general ledger accounts, analyzing financial records, and resolving discrepancies.
• Journal entries: Preparing and reviewing journal entries to ensure proper recording of financial transactions.
• Budgeting and forecasting: Assisting with budget preparation, preparing monthly budget variance analyses, and providing insights for future financial planning.
• Program accounting: Managing and monitoring financial activity across multiple programs (10+ programs), ensuring accurate allocation, tracking, and reporting of program-specific revenues and expenses.
• Supervision: Providing managerial oversight and direction to a bookkeeper, including review of work, guidance, and process improvement.
• Audits, internal controls, and compliance: Supporting and overseeing internal and external audits, including preparing tax returns and maintaining compliance with relevant regulations. Additionally, this role takes the lead in improving systems for transparency, accountability, and compliance with nonprofit regulations and funder policies.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field (CPA or MBA a plus).
• Minimum 5 years of accounting experience, including at least 3 years of nonprofit accounting experience.
• Proven experience as a senior-level Accountant with hands-on accounting responsibilities.
• Experience managing accounting for organizations with 10+ programs or funding streams.
• Prior managerial or supervisory experience, including directing or overseeing a bookkeeper or similar role.
• Technical Accounting expertise: Strong knowledge of GAAP for nonprofit organizations and relevant accounting standards and regulations. Claims-based revenue recognition and billing experience required.
• Advanced computer skills in accounting software: Sage Intacct and Microsoft Excel.
• Advanced Excel skills with the ability to manage and analyze large volumes of financial data (e.g., pivot tables, lookups, data validation).
• Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial report development.
• Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple responsibilities, and meet deadlines.
